Rice Accounts for 20 per cent of Vietnam's Agro Export Revenues
Rice exports accounted for nearly 20 per cent out of Vietnam’s total US$6 billion from farm produce, seafood and forestry export revenues in the first five months of this year, the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (MARD) said.
The ministry said though Vietnam’s rice export volume rose only 22 per cent in Jan-May to 2.27 million tons, its revenues double to US$1.15 billion.
Export prices of Vietnamese rice hit record at US$508 a ton on average in the first five months of 2008, up 61 per cent on year.
The MARD added that Vietnam exported 169,000 tons of rubber worth US$404 million, down 7 per cent on year in volume but up 24 per cent in value; and 52,500 tons of cashew nuts valued at US$61 million, down 12 per cent on year in volume but up 17 per cent in value.
The country’s pepper exports increased 14 per cent on year in value to US$121 million despite a fall of 8 per cent in volume at 34,000 tons.
Exports of coffee decreased both in volume and value, at 483,000 tons worth US$987 million, down 35 per cent and 10 per cent, respectively.
Meanwhile, exports of seafood contributed US$1.48 billion to the total revenues, up 11.6 per cent on year, and woodwork exports brought in US$1.145 billion, up 20.8 per cent. (VNA)
