The Trade Promotion Center under the Ministry of Industry and Trade (MoIT) and the Vietnam Commercial and Industrial Office co-held a seminar on opportunities to export to Japan in the northern port city of Haiphong June 11.

The event drew attention of over 60 local businesses seeking opportunities to enter this potential market.

Speaking at the seminar, Japanese experts said some textile and handicraft products of Vietnam have taken a foothold in the Japanese market, such as clothes, and wood and bamboo souvenirs.

These products have attracted Japanese customers as they are useful, good quality, well designed and made from natural materials, they added.

Apparel and handicrafts exports to Japan will grow sharply if Vietnam improves the design and quality of its products, said the experts.

Japan is now Vietnam’s second biggest export market after the United States.

The two countries are striving to expand the bilateral trade to US$17 billion by 2010. The figure may climb US$18 billion by the year if the two countries sign an economic partnership agreement (EPA) soon.

Vietnam shipped US$2.7 billion goods to Japan in the first four months of this year, up 68 per cent on-year, said the MoIT’s website. (VNA, Vinanet)
