Vietnam Exports Over 2.2 Mln Tons of Rice

Vietnamese companies have exported 2.238 million tons of rice as of June 20, raking in US$1.158 billion, according to the Vietnam Food Association (VFA).
 
The companies will boost purchase of rice from farmers in coming months in order to fulfill target to export around 1.2 million-1.3 million tons of rice from now to late September 2008.
 
Currently, paddy prices in Mekong Delta provinces are around VND5,000 a kilo, slightly down from that a week earlier as local farmers rushed to harvest.
 
The Vietnam Bank for Industry and Trade, or Vietinbank, promised to l local companies VND2 trillion to buy rice.
 
Analysts said bumper paddy crops in both southern and northern regions will enable Vietnam to export 4.5 million tons of rice this year.
 
Under instruction of the Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung, the country will export 3.5 million tons by late September. (Vietnam Economic Times)
