Donors Pledge US$5.014 Bln ODA for Vietnam in 2009, Down 7.2 per cent On Year
International donors had pledged US$5.014 billion in ODA for Vietnam next year at the annual CG meeting late last week, down 7.2 per cent on year as Japan said it decided to halt ODA loans for Vietnam, citing corruption scam.
“US$5.014 billion donors have pledged for Vietnam at the CG meeting is not small, but significant amid the current global crisis,” Planning and Investment Minister Vo Hong Phuc said.
“Vietnam pledged to use ODA sources effectively,” Phuc said.
“Japan has halted ODA for Vietnam but still take special interest in three infrastructure projects in Vietnam,” Phuc added, believing Japan will resume ODA loans for Vietnam in early 2009.
Among 28 donors including 5 multilateral and 23 bilateral donors, the World Bank takes the lead with US$1.66 billion, followed by the Asian Development Bank with US$1.56 billion, EU with US$893 million.
