Sugpo Prawn Prices Fall to Lowest Level in 10 Years
The world economic crisis, resulting in sharp decrease in shrimp consumption, has made prices of sugpo prawn drop to lowest level over the past ten years in Mekong Delta region of Vietnam, the Vietnam Economic Times reported.
Currently in Bac Lieu province, a kilogram of 30 sugpo prawns is selling for only VND75,000-VND80,000, down by VND30,000-VND40,000 a kilo from the same period of last year.
Luong Le Phuong, deputy minister of Agriculture and Rural Development said sugpo prawn export to the U.S., and Japan have decreased from 32 per cent to 19 per cent
According to the MARD, seven coastal provinces in the Mekong Delta region have cultivated 540,000 hectares of shrimp, accounting for 90 per cent of the country’s total shrimp area, and including 538,000 hectares of sugpo prawn and 807 hectares of white-legged shrimp.
The region is estimated to catch 160,566 tons of shrimp this year, accounting for 76.3 per cent of the country’s total volume.
Shrimp has been the biggest forex earner of Vietnamese seafood, bringing in US$1.354 billion in the first ten months of this year, or accounting for 35.37 per cent. (Vietnam Economic Times)
