Construction of a highway linking Danang city and Quang Ngai province in central Vietnam will cost more than US$2.48 billion, the Ministry of Transport said.

The estimate was disclosed by the ministry’s Project Management Unit 85, after it had a meeting with representatives from the municipal People’s Committee, World Bank and Japan International Cooperation Agency on February 24.

The road, 130 kilometers in length, 25.5 meters in width, is designed by Japan’s Nippon Koei Co. Ltd and allows vehicles to travel at speeds of 100 kilometers per hour once operational.

The project’s preliminary plans have got the two localities’ approval, the unit said, adding that the route would displace some 560 households.

The Vietnamese government is urging the concerned localities and agencies to complete investment procedures and mobilize capital to carry out the project in 2011.

This is a strategic road for the development of Quang Ngai-based Dung Quat Economic Zone in particular and the central Vietnam region in general.

Vietnam is estimated to require some US$48 billion to develop its expressway network of 5,753 kilometers between now and 2020 under a plan approved by the Prime Minister.  (Saigon Liberation, Young People)
