The Information Center for Agriculture and Rural Development (Agroinfo) forecast that rice prices will continue rising in the coming months thanks to high demand for the Lunar New Year and export to the Philippines.

The Vietnam Food Association (VFA) said Monday that rice prices rose by VND700-VND1,000/kilo from a week earlier to between VND4,200-VND4,300/kilo of ordinary rice and VND4,800-VND5,000/kilo of high-quality rice.

The association said there is not much rice in stock even though local farmers have basically completed harvest of autumn-winter crop.

Meanwhile, the Thai government announced it will buy an additional 2 million tons of unhusked rice from farmers. India is likely to import 2 million tons of rice in 2010. (Agroinfo)
