The Vietnamese presidential office made public Dec 17 the new laws on telecommunications and wireless radio frequency, which will set up a legal framework for the nation’s growing wi-fi boom.

The law will take effect from July 1, 2010, the office noted.

The Law on Telecommunications will allow companies in all economic sectors, even private firms, to build telecom infrastructure network and provide telecom services.

Administrative agencies will be set up to oversee the telecommunications industry.

Companies can also share telecommunications infrastructure, including antenna masts and cable stations. Such sharing would be compulsory in cases involving the public interest, national defense or public order and security.

Deputy Minister of Information and Communications Le Nam Thang said the law included special provisions to protect the rights and interests of telecom service subscribers.

The Law on Wireless Radio Frequency regulates wi-fi frequencies and services, the government said.

It will also support the development of wi-fi services in rural areas and for national defense purposes. (www.chinhphu.vn))
