Vietnam Dec CPI Up 1.38% on Month, Up 6.25% On Year: GSO

Vietnam’s consumer price index in December is estimated to have soared 1.38% from a month earlier, driven by higher costs of housing and construction materials and transportation, the government’s General Statistics Office said on December 24.
 
The CPI was up 6.52% from a year earlier, the statistics office said.
 
In December, cost of housing and construction materials rose 1.4% from last month and were up 12.58% from a year earlier, transportation up 2.47% on-month and 12.45% on-year.
 
Foodstuffs and services posted an increase of 2.06% on-month and 5.78% on-year, the GSO said.
 
Prices of apparel, footwear and hats grew 0.81% on-month and surged 6.05% on year while prices of beverages and tobacco rose by 0.97% on-month and jumped 7.56% on-year, it added.
 
Medicines are estimated to have been up 0.44% on-month and up 3.26% on-year.
 
Cultural, sports and recreation services increased 0.07% on-month and up 2.1% on-year. Domestic appliance prices are estimated to be up 0.25% on-month and 4.94% on-year.
 
Gold have gone up 10.49% on-month and up 64.32% on-year in Vietnam while the U.S. dollar strengthened against the Vietnamese dong by 3.19% on-month and 10.7% on-year.
 
The GSO statistics also showed that the CPI in urban areas in Vietnam rose 1.31% on-month and surged 7.34% on year while the index in rural regions was up 1.41% and 5.83%, respectively.
 
In November, the central bank decided to raise the base interest rate to 8% per annum from 7% effective from Dec 1, reset the inter-bank dollar exchange rate up 5.44% to VND17,691 and narrow the trading band by 2% to 3% from Nov 26. (GSO)
