Vietnam is estimated to require between VND360 trillion and VND440 trillion (US$19.5 billion-US$23.81 billion) for seaport development from now to 2020, the government said.

Of the sum, 12%-15% would come from the state budget and the rest is expected from private investors.

Vietnam estimates that seaports will be capable of handling between 500 million tons and 600 million tons of cargoes per year in 2015 and between 900 million tons and 1.1 billion tons of cargoes annually in 2020.

To reach the result, the Southeast Asian country must give priority to the development of deepwater ports including Van Phong port in the central province of Khanh Hoa.

Currently, Vietnam has to date had 39 seaports. (VGP)
