The administration of coastal Quang Ngai province in central Vietnam has approved a multimillion-dollar plan to develop tourism on Ly Son island district near the Spratly archipelago, state media reported.

The authorities adopted the plan Mar 10, aimed to focus investment on tourism and seafood industries on the offshore district, located some 430 nautical miles from Spratly islands, the Nhan Dan (The People) newspaper reported.

Officials intend to pour more than VND3,634 billion ($191 million) into building infrastructure on Ly Son until 2020, especially for tourism and defense.

The plan also targets to develop various tours that bring visitors to many attractions on and off the island, such as the memorial of Vietnamese feudal soldiers sent to station on Spratly islands.

The local authorities have told domestic and foreign media that they intend to send tourists to the nearby Spratly archipelago.

Vietnamese leaders have said they would prioritize developing marine industries and protecting sovereignty over the Spratly and Paracel archipelagos.
