Vietnam Coffee Exports Drop to 3 Years’ Record Low

Vietnam’s coffee exports in the first quarter of 2010 bottomed in terms of volume, value and prices in the recent three years, the General Customs Department said on its website.
 
The department said the country exported 345,000 tons of beans at averaged prices of $1,398/ton, earning $483 million, representing on-year decreases of 22%; 7.4% and 27.8%, respectively.
 
The country exported nearly 550,000 tons of beans at averaged prices of nearly $1,500/ton recorded in the first quarter of 2007, and nearly 400,000 tons at nearly $2,000/ton in the first quarter of 2008, the department said.
 
Germany and the U.S. were still the biggest importers of Vietnamese coffee, accounting for a combined 22% of the country’s total export volume.
 
In Jan-Mar, Germany imported 48,277 tons worth $67.86 million, down 0.1% and 8.6% from a year earlier.
 
The U.S. imported 39,633 tons valued at $60.35 million, down 8.4% in volume and 9.5% in value against previous year.
 
Other big importers included Italy, Spain and Japan which spent nearly $30.1 million; $24.5 million and $26.2 million on importing 21,759 tons; 18,018 tons and 16,814 tons, respectively. (customs.gov.vn)
