Japan Mulling over Establishment of PPP Forum in Vietnam
Japanese Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) Akihiro Ohata has proposed to set up a forum on public private partnerships (PPP) policies in Vietnam.
The forum will focus on discussing infrastructure development in the capital city of Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City as well as structures and policies under the PPP forum in Vietnam, Ohata said.
The establishment is good idea as Japan is the biggest donors for Vietnamese infrastructure projects, Minister of Planning and Investment (MPI) Vo Hong Phuc said, expecting the MPI and METI will be partners to carry out the initiative.
Japan is now the largest bilateral donor of Vietnam with roughly $16 billion committed to the country, accounting for one third of the country’s pledged ODA. It pledged $1.64 billion ODA to the country this year.
As of Oct 20, Japanese firms poured $20.55 billion into 1,260 projects in Vietnam, ranking the 3rd among the countries and territories making investment in the Southeast Asian country.
Vietnam is in need of capital for its road transport projects. Participation of private firms is very important in narrowing financial distance between demand of infrastructure and available budget, an expert from Asian Development Bank (ADB) earlier said. (Investment)
