Located in Cam Ranh Bay, one of the three most beautiful bays in the world, Cam Ranh Port gathers many natural preferential conditions to develop port services such as: deep-water bay, not being deposited, near international marine lanes, etc. Especially, given the favourable position, Cam Ranh port is an important traffic terminal of the whole Highland and South Central region, as well as the business gateway between regional provinces and other national and international areas.
Cam Ranh port saw its move in 1995 when Khanh Hoa provincial People’s Committee decided to upgrade and expand the port in phases. So far, after 20 years of construction and development (1992 – 2011), Cam Ranh port has witnessed continuous growth and become a national port complex and an important sea traffic line of Highland and South Central region area with comprehensively invested infrastructure.
At the moment, the port has put into operation 10.3 hectares, the quay with length of 182 meters can receive ships of 30,000DWT, the inside berth can receive ships of 5,000DWT; depth alongside berth is 11.6 meters. Being invested together with quay, warehouse and stock are complete and comprehensive with stock 18,000 square meters, warehouse 30,000 square meters, ensuring customers’ freight retaining. Investment into port expansion, warehouse and loading equipment has increased cargo loading capacity to 1.5 million tonnes per year, ensured quick ship clearance.
With timely and comprehensive investment for years, Cam Ranh port’s production and business activities have seen significant development. Cargo volume via the port has increased 15 fold since the foundation year. In particular, in 1992, cargo volume via the port was only 95,000 tonnes whereas in recent years, cargo volume via port has been over 1.2 million tonnes per year. Especially, the volume in 2010 was nearly 1.49 tonnes, much more than the port’s designed loading capacity of 700,000 tonnes per year. The annual turnover sees growth of 27 percent on average; the turnover in 2010 was nearly 58.91 billion, exceeding 1992 by 50 fold. In the first 9 months of 2011 alone, cargo volume via the port was 1.22 million tonnes, meeting 78.7 percent of the year’s plan; profit was over VND 3.5 billion, 88.4 percent of the year’s plan, and National Budget submission was over VND 3.7 billion, 107.6 percent of the year’s plan.
For these achievements, Cam Ranh port was awarded the Certificate of Merit by the Prime Minister for “performance in national construction” in 2004, the level 3 Labour medal by Prime Minister in 2005, and the Flag of merit by Ministry of Transport. Especially, on the occasion of 20th foundation anniversary, the port was awarded the level 2 Labour Medal by the Prime Minister and level 3 Labour Medal for Cam Ranh port’s Labour Union; some individuals and organizations were presented Certificates of Merit by Prime Minister, Ministry of Transport.
Mr Pham Huu Tan, Director General of Cam Ranh port, said that to promote Cam Ranh port to its full potential, to become one of 17 national port complexes, regional level-1 terminal under Decision 2190/QD-TTg by Prime Minister, the port has continuously invested in production facilities, warehouse system, loading equipment comprehensively and upgrading ship-to-shore technology to increase loading capacity and reduce damages. According to the agenda to 2020, Cam Ranh port will change the existing berth complex and container into a specialized berth, newly build a wharf for general goods, and comprehensively invest in a container storage warehouse, container repair zone and loading facilities and technologies. In addition, to meet work demand, Cam Ranh port’s management will continue to pay attention to human resource development, and create preferential conditions for staff and employees to better professionalism. Especially, the port will associate with other large port in skilled worker training and foreign language studying to serve international integration.
