Pu Mat National Park: Green tourism
Nguyen Thanh Nhan - Director, Pu Mat National Park
Pu Mat national park was established by Decision 174/QD-TTg dated November 8, 2001, by the Prime Minister. It covers 91,113 hectares of forest, of which one third is primitive forest. The national park is for scientific research, international cooperation, environmental protection, sustainable socioeconomic development and eco-tourism.
With its green forests, mountains, streams and waterfalls the national park creates a new world for visitors. The ideal setting is still under preparation for the tourism year of Nghe An Province. A road is being built linking Highway 7 with Kem Waterfall and a public education centre will be set up to enhance the protection of forests and the environment. A centre for the protection of endangered species has been established by SFNC and the national park, resulting in the salvation of thousands of wild mammals, including rare and endangered species.
The 35 hectare botanical garden collects and preserves genes for scientific research. It is a particularly significant achievement of the national park in light of its budget constraint.
In Pu Mat national park, visitors are free to choose their favourite place to enjoy the beauty of nature. The adventurous can enjoy mountain climbing, while those seeking a more relaxing environment can wander through the Po Mu and Sa Mu forests with its enormous trees measuring 40 metres in height and 4-5 metres in diameter. Visitors can also row boats along the Giang River, which winds through the forest, visit the Dan Lai ethnic minority community and go fishing for 82 different kinds of fish.
