Quynh Luu district: Combining the Cultural and the Natural

Tran Ngoc Vang - Vice-Chairman, Quynh Luu People’s Committee

Quynh Luu district is located at the Northern entrance of the province, bordering Thanh Hoa, and is regarded as a miniature Nghe An Province. The district is endowed with wonderful landscapes, beautiful mountains, long coastlines and rivers, fertile fields and rich forests. Highway 1A, North-South railways and several road networks link the district with the rest of the country. The district is rich in economic potential and human resources, which are key in the development of industry, agriculture, fisheries, forestry and tourism.

In ancient times, humans first set foot on the area in their quest to find the sea. Three archaeological sites have been unearthed on three hills (Dat, Loi and Diep) with Stone Age artefacts of the Quynh Van era.

The area also bears witness to the fight led by Ly against foreign invasion. Furthermore, General Ho Huu Nhan who fought against the Mongolian Yuan and General Dang Te Danh against Sung invaders are worshipped respectively in Quynh Bang and Quynh Lien communes.

During the French and American wars, all the relics were protected by the population and several temples have been recognised as cultural relics, such as Con, Xuan Uc, Thuong and Phu Da. All the festivals at the temples are celebrated in the early part of the lunar year and last for a week. The festivities include traditional games, including wrestling, boat rowing, chess, lion dancing, folk songs and music, which attract local and foreign visitors from other provinces.

Quynh Luu has a 34 km long coastline and can be developed into a special economic zone, with 15 kilometres of beaches, three river mouths and 100 hectares for aquaculture.

Bai Ngang is a beautiful and clean beach stretching 10 kilometres between the Oi and Rong mountains at either ends. Other beaches have also been recently developed, including Quynh Bang, Quynh Phuong, Quynh Luong and Quynh Nghia, which attract tens of thousands of tourists every year.

In the Northern part of Quynh Luu, Hoang Mai IZ has been established and will become an urban area covering eight communes. In the southern and south-western areas there are primitive and planted forests and 80 reservoirs for irrigation and eco-tourism. At the summit of Rong Mountain is Tien (Fairy) Peak where a Fairy pond and a Fairy chess board exist that are legendary and attractive sites for tourists.

Quynh Luu, a land of legends and great potential, calls for cooperation and investment from Vietnamese and foreign partners.
