Despite economic difficulties and challenges in the past years, Ninh Thuan province’s industrial production has managed to achieve encouraging results. Some key products continue to make their strong footholds on the market, thus helping the province to create more jobs and improve living quality of local labourers.
In 2012, Ninh Thuan province’s industrial indicators still showed signs of progress in spite of mounting economic difficulties and challenges in the country and in the world. Industrial output valued at VND1,879 billion in 2012, representing a year on year rise of 10.5 per cent. Some sectors advanced very strongly like RS sugar (up 41.13 per cent), seafood export (31.08 per cent), granite paving stone (45.56 per cent), cashew (7.58 per cent), cigarette (20 per cent). Total retail revenue of goods and services reached VND9,384.45 billion, up 19.2 per cent year on year.

Vietnamese exporters in general and Ninh Thuan-based firms in particular confronted numerous hardships in export in 2012 because of economic slowdown. Notably, to reduce Vietnam’s cashew nut export, China not only raised quality standards but also quadrupled taxes, leading to shrinkage in cashew nut export in the province. Meanwhile, local firms fell short of shrimp materials and faced growing competitive pressures from India and Thailand. But, Ninh Thuan province-based exporters impressed foreign customers (e.g. Japan and Germany) with their close culturing and production processes and its satisfaction of food hygiene and safety conditions. In 2012, the province’s total exports reached US$62 million, of which cashew nuts accounted for US$46.77 million, seafood with US$14.2 million, and other goods with US$1.21 million.

Mr Nguyen Thanh Hoan, Director of the Department of Industry and Trade of Ninh Thuan province, said the industrial sector will contribute 27 per cent to the province’s GDP by 2015. The province will focus on developing locally advantageous processing industries like industrial salt production, industrial food processing, beverage and mineral processing. Ninh Thuan will also develop energy industries and supporting industries. However, most industrial sectors faced difficulties in selling products because of continued economic downturn in 2012. This affected the overall industrial development of the province in the year. Currently, most enterprises are focusing on stabilising production and not planning to expand operations. This will cause a significant impact on the overall growth in the 2011 - 2015 period.

In 2013, Ninh Thuan will attract and accelerate investment in large-scale industrial projects, particularly new energy and clean industry; step up investment promotion activities to catch the attention and interest of domestic and foreign investors. The province will focus in six pillar industries like renewable energy, mining, industrial zone infrastructure development, water supply, tourism, etc. Besides, the province will introduce measures to promote production and business development, maintain growth and economic development. The industrial production value is expected to expand 19 - 20 per cent in 2013, total retail sales of goods and services reached VND11,000 billion, exports grossed US$70 million, and imports totalled US$20 million.
