Hanoi Heart Hospital was established in 2001 but it started the service in 2004 and performed its first open-heart surgery on July 25, 2004. The hospital has become a prestigious leader in medical treatment, cardiovascular intervention and cardiac surgery unit in the country.
Stepping up cooperation for expertise improvement
Currently, Hanoi Heart Hospital has mastered advanced techniques for open heart surgery; thus, it has performed many complicated operations. To further enhance expertise levels, the hospital has actively cooperated and exchanged experience in cardiovascular consultation, surgery and intervention with leading cardiovascular experts in the country (from the Ho Chi Minh City Heart Institute, the National Institute of Cardiology, National Paediatrics Institute, Viet Duc Hospital) as well as international experts from Singapore, Malaysia, the United States, and France.
The hospital’s doctors have been sent to study at major cardiovascular centres in the United States, France, South Korea, Japan and Singapore. Many doctors from France, India and Singapore have also come to study and exchange experience at the hospital. It also continuously supports domestic medical units with knowledge training and transfer of deep techniques like cardiovascular intervention, cardiac surgery, congenital echocardiography, and foetal echocardiography. It also focuses on improving and modernising infrastructure and equipment such as coronary angiography system, electrophysiological cardiac detectors, MRIs with a 1.5 tesla strength magnet, and echocardiographic machines.
In addition, the hospital has supported successful transfer of open heart surgery techniques to a number of hospitals like Nghe An General Hospital, Nghe An Maternity - Paediatrics Hospital and Hospital 103. It also helps hospitals in neighbouring provinces like Thai Binh, Hoa Binh, Bac Ninh and Bac Giang and districts in Hanoi City to train cardiovascular specialisations to help reduce cases transferred to higher hospitals.
In 2012, the Hanoi Department of Health assigned the leading mission of cardiovascular specialisation to Hanoi Heart Hospital. This plus hypertension treatment programme opened up many opportunities and challenges for the hospital. Consultations are more effective. Supervisory activities over professional expertise and medical record regulations are intensified as requested by the Department of Health to address shortages.
Upgrading and reorganising the apparatus
Under the direction of the director, Medical Treatment Department together with the Diagnosis Department and Emergency Department has improved professional quality and built up an ethical image in receiving and serving patients.
For example, the Disease Examination Department had a lot of changes like reorganising the location of examination wards, X-ray wards, laboratories, and reception wards. The department starts daily examination service from 7:00 am to reduce loads in peak hours while its operations are synchronised with other departments like Laboratory, X-ray Department, Functional Testing Department and Finance & Accounting Department to reduce the waiting time and moving distance for patients. The nursing service is carried out in line with the Circular 07/2011/TT-BYT of the Ministry of Health while the nursing staff is reorganised to boost teamwork efficiency. The Treatment Department excellently performs treatments, surgical preparations and interventions for patients to increase the rate of treatment success.
The hospital has successfully carried out many complex techniques, applied new techniques like peripheral vascular intervention and arrhythmias treatment and studied the application of other more sophisticated techniques like heart valve replacement through skin. The hospital has mastered open heart surgery techniques remain, performed many complicated and difficult heart surgeries. Notably, the hospital successfully operated on congenital heart disease for a kid weighing less than 3 kg.
Hanoi Heart Hospital also actively carries out charity activities. It signed a heart surgery programme with the Vietnam Children Support Fund to perform heart operations for children and inked liability agreement with other charity funds like HSCV Foundation (US), East Meets West Foundation (US), Sunny Korea (South Korea), and “Heart for Kids” Programme to finance heart surgeries for kids. To date, 494 children have their hearts operated. Each year, this funds finance VND17 billion for these surgeries.
