Behind her success is a happy family. For her, all glories are meaningless if the family and its values are disregarded. The Creator gives women the natural roles of wife and mother and the society gives them a huge responsibility of business leadership. Therefore, she always excellently does her housekeeping roles while fulfilling all social responsibilities. Doing well both tasks is very difficult but she manages to do them. She is Pham Thi Can, Chairwoman of the Board of Members of POLYCO Group - the “Golden Rose” of the mechanical engineering industry.
Fate
She, formerly a teacher, walked into the business world as a fate of life. Her husband, Dr Dinh Van Thuan, was a thermal machinery and equipment professor of Engineering Department (present-day Institute of Thermal and Refrigeration Engineering Science and Technology), Hanoi University of Science and Technology and he was also the manager of his family’s mechanical workshop too. Seeing that her husband worked too hard, she suggested running the family business for him. She soon realised that she had the faculty for business.
After a short time working with the new job, she learned and made all decisions on business affairs on her own, from business activities, market development to external relationships. She did all jobs excellently. Whenever her husband left home for business trip, she secretly went here and there to study and expand the market and develop product brand names. After two years running the family workshop, she decided to turn it into a powerful business group. In May 1995, she and her husband set up Polytechnic Mechanical, Thermal, Electrical and Refrigeration Engineering Company Limited (Polyco).
Leading the company forward
The company develops on the basis of its development criteria “Quality, industrial artistry and modern technology" together with its business reputation. After 18 years of operations, POLYCO has asserted its name in the mechanical engineering industry in Vietnam with world-class works. POLYCO is now the trusted strategic partner of many big domestic and international corporations like Krones, KHS, Siemens, Kieselmann, Sabeco, Habeco, Carlsberg, Halida, HUDA, Vinamilk and various companies operating in the fields of beer, beverage, food, milk and agricultural products.
The company’s success is crystallised from the effort and determination of every staff who constantly upgrades the latest professional knowledge in the world and acquires new technologies to create innovative products. The company’s products have won many prestigious awards like VIFOTEC 2000, VIFOTEC 2004, and Ho Chi Minh Award in 2005. The company was also hailed by the Government for generating highly technical and economic research projects. This was a source of motivation for the company to set up the Institute of Applied Research and invest in internationally standardised factories powered by advanced equipment and machinery like machine cutting tools, hydraulic machines, plasma welding machines, Plasma automatic welding equipment, polyurethane sprayers, all imported from Europe.
With her scientific working methods, POLYCO has created a reputation and credibility to domestic and foreign customers. Not only being involved in mechanical engineering, POLYCO Group has expanded into many business lines to meet rigorous requirements of food industry specialisations like surveying, designing, installing and repairing, transferring technologies of heat, refrigeration, automation, measurement and food machinery.
She was also the head of the Party cell of the company. She with her CEO husband has brought POLYCO from a small mechanical workshop into a powerful business group with some 1,000 employees capable of advising, designing, fabricating, and installing equipment and machinery provided by the company for mechanics, electricity, refrigeration, measurement and automation industries. Its automation business accounts for 70 percent of the market share.
