The annual meeting between Prime Minister Phan Van Khai and representatives from enterprises operating in Vietnam this year, which is slated for December 22, has been delayed to the beginning of 2006, the Vietnam Chamber of Commerce and Industry (VCCI) announced.

The reason for the rescheduling of the meeting as well as the new timing for the event, however, has not been made available.

According to the Government Office, the upcoming meeting aims to seek the most feasible way for the country to fulfill the 2006-2010 socioeconomic development plan.

The meeting will be entitled “Vietnamese businesses with socioeconomic development program 2006-2010” and focus on solutions and recommendations from businesses and scientists to fully tap the business circles' strength so as to fulfill the country's socio-economic development plan till 2010 and speed up the international economic integration process.

It is expected to gather more than 600 representatives from domestic and foreign business circles, business associations and localities, and, for the first time, scientists.

The meeting’s agenda will comprise of four sessions including solutions for proposals from businesses, report on opportunities and challenges in the country’s global integration, report on the settlement for administrative procedure-related difficulties, report on five-year socio-economic development targets with orientation and adjustments for policy mechanism, tax, customs and environment.

Before the meeting, the Vietnam Chamber of Commerce and Industry and business associations have organized dialogues to tackle obstacles facing businesses, including customs tax, land acquisition, and the relationship between employers and employees

The last meeting was held on October 13, 2004 and the date October 13 was then selected as the annual Vietnamese Entrepreneurs’ Day.

The annual dialogue between the top leader of the Government and the business community aims to discuss and solve any impediments, showing the government’s determination to improve the business environment ahead of further integration into the global economy.

Since Vietnam engaged in the renovation process in the 1980s, especially in recent years, the important role of entrepreneurs is increasingly recognized in the country’s economic development. However, local firms are currently dissatisfied with some policies concerning business registration and operation, customs and administrative procedures, land uses as well as taxes.
