To continue the success story, in 2005-2010, Kien Giang will increase the growth rate to over 13 per cent, GDP per capita to US$1,000-1,100. Economic planning and programmes have been developed to attain the objectives.
Long Xuyen rectangular and Hon Dat - Ha Tien coastline
Alongside the intensive production of agriculture, forestry and fisheries, Kien Giang will focus on the development sea and eco-tourism, combining natural landscapes with cultural and historic relics along the coastline and Phu Quoc island such as Nai Cape, Hang Pagoda, and Hon Dat. The province will develop industrial complexes, border trade, border economic zones such as Xa Xia border gate and Ha Tien commercial centre. Kien Giang - An Giang road, water supply project and irrigation network will be built. Economic co-operation with Cambodia will be promoted and Ha Tien town will be a city of culture and tourism by 2010.
Rach Gia city and vicinity
Kien Giang will focus on the development of infrastructure in industrial zones, fish port, supporting mechanics, logistics and processing industries. Trade and services will be promoted such as finance, banking, post and telecommunication, and health care. The development of organic vegetable, flowers, bonsai will be encouraged to promote tourism. Urbanisation will be combined with waste treatment and environment protection. The airport, road network and water supply will be upgraded. Rach Gia city will play an important role in the development of the province.
HauRiverWest Side
Kien Giang will accelerate the rural development, creating a stable and high quality agricultural production. Vocational training and technology transfer will be promoted to increase the quality of the products, combine production and processing, agriculture and traditional craft. Commercial centres and rural markets will be developed and connected with economic activities of neighbouring Hau Giang province and Can Tho city.
Ca Mau peninsular
Irrigation works will be developed combining rice cultivation and shrimp raising. Handicraft and processing industry will be promoted together with eco-tourism and scientific research in U Minh Thuong National Park. Fish port, roads, commercial centres will be built, and vocational training developed to meet the demand of industrial zones and labour export. By 2010, Kien Giang will bring poor districts to the same level as others in the province.
Phu Quoc island
Kien Giang will promote island economy, focusing on tourism of different kinds : ecology, scientific research, culture, conference. Infrastructure will be upgraded connecting inland and island tours, improving the supply of electricity and water, attracting investments to the islands especially Phu Quoc Island in compliance of Decision 178/2004/QD-TTg of the Prime Minister. Together with raising aquatic products, offshore fishing will be expanded together with the processing industry and tourism.
Together with five economic zones, Kien Giang also possesses five development programmes such as industrial zones, agricultural and aquatic processing, commercial centres and rural markets, vocational training and employment, and Phu Quoc tourism.
