After its merger, Na Tau commune has entered a new stage of development, with extensive land, a large population, and abundant labor and land resources. Using these strengths, local authorities and residents have set a clear strategic direction: make agriculture the foundation of growth, with coffee as the main crop.

Coffee development project in Na Tau commune

A poverty-reducing, wealth-creating crop

With extensive agricultural land and favorable climate and soil conditions, Na Tau has strong potential for agricultural development. In the past, residents mainly grew short-cycle food crops, resulting in unstable incomes. In recent years, following the policy to restructure crops, Na Tau has prioritized coffee as a main crop to increase economic value and provide stable livelihoods. From small scattered plots, the commune now has a specialized coffee-growing area spanning hundreds of ha, providing stable employment for hundreds of households. Many families who once faced food insecurity have gradually stabilized their lives and some have even achieved relative prosperity.

Recognizing coffee as a key economic driver, the local government has actively promoted the crop by encouraging farmers to convert low-yield land to coffee cultivation. The commune collaborates with technical agencies to provide training, supply seedlings and materials, and organize study visits and experience exchanges on coffee cultivation. Many households have invested in drip irrigation systems and adopted clean cultivation practices, improving both yield and bean quality.

Currently, the commune maintains 324 ha of coffee, concentrated mainly in villages such as Na Tau, Pa Khoang, and Na Pen. Coffee is cultivated across hills, valleys, and intercropped with fruit trees, becoming a major industrial crop that generates high economic value for farmers and local processing and production enterprises. Many households have developed integrated production, processing, and marketing models, forming closed-value chains. Na Tau coffee has already attracted interest from several markets.

Na Tau Coffee Overview After the Merger
• Area: approximately 300 ha
• Average yield: 10-12 tons of fresh cherries per ha
• Annual production: over 10 tons of fresh cherries
• More than 500 households engaged in coffee cultivation
• Hundreds of households lifted out of poverty, with many achieving relative prosperity through coffee

Some households have also combined coffee farming with experiential tourism, allowing visitors to tour the plantations, pick beans, and roast them on site, creating positive early effects in promoting the commune’s image.

Nguyen Tien Tuan, Standing Deputy Secretary of the Na Tau Commune Party Committee, emphasized, “The Party Committee has always considered coffee development a central task in restructuring the local economy. Experience has shown that coffee not only helps people escape poverty but can also become a source of wealth, providing an important driving force to make Na Tau increasingly prosperous, cultured, and modern.”

Key tasks for the new term

Despite its clear benefits, coffee production in Na Tau still faces several challenges: unstable cultivation areas, uneven yields, limited processing capacity, products mainly sold in raw form, and weak links with businesses. To make coffee a true source of wealth, support from the province and the government is essential, including investment in capital, scientific and technical assistance, infrastructure, and market connections.

“The commune will continue to develop coffee as a commercial crop, linked to processing and brand building. Beyond the efforts of the Party Committee, People’s Council, and local authorities, and the dedication of residents, we hope the province and relevant agencies provide technical support for cultivation, pest control, and attract businesses to invest and purchase products. With business partnerships, Na Tau coffee’s value will certainly increase, bringing practical and sustainable benefits to local people,” Tran Quang Trung, Chairman of Na Tau Commune People’s Committee, emphasized.

For the 2025-2030 term, Na Tau has set these priority tasks: plan and expand sustainable coffee-growing areas using advanced scientific and technical methods to improve yield and quality; attract businesses and cooperatives to invest in deep processing and gradually build Na Tau coffee into a signature OCOP product; diversify agricultural production and develop livestock and fruit trees to raise incomes while ensuring food security; accelerate the construction of advanced new rural areas by linking economic development with infrastructure improvements to enhance residents’ quality of life; and strengthen support for agricultural startups while encouraging household and cooperative economic models combined with services and community tourism to create additional sustainable livelihoods.

The development of coffee in Na Tau demonstrates the effectiveness of restructuring agriculture toward commercial production. With strong leadership from the Party Committee, decisive governance, community solidarity, and support from the province and national government, Na Tau coffee is expected to become a key wealth-generating crop, contributing significantly to the commune’s sustainable development goals.
