Vietnam Checks All Shrimp Batches Exported to Japan

Vietnam will closely check all frozen shrimp batches before shipping them to Japan in order to prevent any with antibiotic residues or banned chemicals from entering Vietnam’s most important sea product market in Asia.

The focus would be on exporters whose shipments had been found to be contaminated by the Japanese authorities, said the National Fisheries Quality Assurance and Veterinary Directorate (Nafiqaved).

All seafood exporters were required to register for export to Japan, it said.

The directorate’s move follows an announcement by the Japanese Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare that antibiotic residues were found in five batches of frozen shrimp from Vietnam.

The number of contaminated batches has increased to 39 since December 2006 when Japan began to inspect all frozen shrimp from Vietnam for Chloramphenicol.
