Vinashin Launches 53,000-ton Freighter Exported to UK
Vietnam’s largest shipbuilder Vinashin launched a new 53,000-ton cargo ship in northern port city Haiphong on April 20, which will be delivered to a UK-based shipping firm.
The exported ship will be sent to Graig Investments Group, a Vinashin official said at the launching ceremony.
The ship, measuring 190m long and 32.26m wide, is one of a series of fifteen 53,000-ton ships due to be handed over to Graig Investments Group.
The $26.5-million ship, equipped with a 9,480 horsepower engine to travel at a speed of 14 nautical miles an hour, was designed by Denmark’s CarlBro and built under the supervision of DNV, a Norwegian registration agency.
This vessel is built by Vinashin’s affiliate, Nam Trieu Shipbuilding Industry Corp (Nasico) and is also the largest built in Vietnam, under a contract worth nearly US$1 billion between Vinashin and the Graig Group.
Vinashin, or Vietnam Shipbuilding Industry Group, plans to build ships capable of carrying 320,000 tons in coming years.
Vinashin is building many new shipyards and upgrading existing ones throughout Vietnam, aiming to turn Vietnam into the world’s fourth largest shipbuilder, from its current 11th place.
Last year, Vinashin obtained total sales of more than US$1 billion, up 50 per cent on 2005. (VNA)
