The Vietnam Automobile Manufacturers Association (VAMA) has announced that car sales of its 16 member carmakers rose 79 per cent on year to 28,524 units in the first six months this year as more people are affordable for the four-wheeler.

The fast-growing economy is enriching many people who now want to buy luxury conveniences to display their riches, a car trader said, citing the government’s source that Vietnam’s GDP grew nearly 8 per cent in the first half and was hopeful of 9 per cent increase in the second half.

VAMA said the June selling volume increased 9 per cent on month and 62 per cent on year to 6,083 units.

Dr. Udo F. Loersch, chairman of VAMA, said in a statement that the growth was mainly contributed by the sales of SUV/MPV with respective on-year rise of 29 per cent and 270 per cent in June and January-June to 1,813 units and 9,314 units.

However, commercial vehicles were the best sellers with sales of 2,751 units in June and 12,721 units in January-June.

Japanese-led Toyota Vietnam remains the largest carmaker with sales of 1,774 cars in June, totaling 8,162 units in the six months, accounting for 28.6 per cent.

Vindaco sold no cars because it has stopped making Daihatsu vehicles.

According to government’s general statistics office, Vietnam imported 8,000 finished cars valued at $140 million in the first half this year, up 11.7 per cent on year in volume and 23.5 per cent in value.
