Ha Long Bay Runs for World Natural Wonder
Thanh Nien Newspaper and Tuan Chau Resort (Ha Long, Quang Ninh Province) launched an international campaign on August 13 to vote for Ha Long Bay as one of the world’s seven new natural wonders.
This is an opportunity for the Vietnamese people as well as international friends to have a deeper understanding of the land, the nature and the people of Vietnam and to create a new boost for the development of the Vietnamese tourism in the integration process.
At the press conference, Mr Tran Chien Thang, Deputy Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism emphasized: “This is an important and meaningful activity to diffuse, propagandise and mobilise the Vietnamese people and international visitors to vote for Ha Long Bay as the World Natural Wonder proposed by NewOpenWord. The nomination will heighten the site’s value and help develop the country’s tourism.”
Ha Long Bay is assessed as one of the 29 most beautiful bays in the world. The bay was twice acknowledged as a World Heritage Site, in 1994 and in 2000. The result of the election will be announced August 8, 2008.
Following are opinions of experts about this issue:
Mr Hoang Tuan Anh, Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism
The nomination of Ha Long Bay as World Natural Wonder is a good opportunity. We will have another channel to supply information and advertise Ha Long Bay and Vietnamese tourism worldwide. The ministry has concrete plans to fully tap this opportunity to bring images and information on Vietnamese tourism to international visitors.
Mr Nguyen Quoc Ky, General Director of Vietravel
I think this is a very good chance for the Vietnamese hospitality sector to spread the news about Vietnamese tourism to international visitors. In my opinion, the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism should quickly grasp this opportunity to advertise Vietnamese tourism, as well as raise the awareness of the Vietnamese people in protecting this invaluable heritage.
