Vietnam surpassed Brazil to become the biggest raw coffee nut exporter to Spain in 2006, local media reported on August 20.
Last year, Vietnam shipped 94,653 tons of coffee nuts to Spain, occupying nearly 40 per cent of the country’s coffee import volume. Followers were Brazil, Colombia, Germany, Uganda and Ivory Coast with 44,323 tons, 17,283 tons, 15,158 tons, 13,690 tons and 12,483 tons.
Spanish Coffee Federation said total imported raw coffee volume included 39.18 per cent of Arabica and 60.82 per cent of robusta.
In 2006, Spain imported totally 261,412 tons of coffee, up 1.7 per cent against 2005, including 241,387 tons of raw coffee nuts, 15,001 tons of dry coffee and 5,025 tons of instant coffee.
At the same year, the country exported 49,028 tons of coffee, down 7.4 per cent from 2005.
Vietnam exported 897,000 tons of coffee totaling USUS$1.1 billion in 2006, seeing respective increases of 0.5 per cent and 49.9 per cent against 2005.
The country has been the world’s biggest robusta coffee since 2000.
In the first seven months of 2007, Vietnam exported 893,000 tons of coffee beans worth USUS$1.3 billion, up 56.6 per cent and 102.1 per cent, respectively.
The country initially expected that coffee exports will bring in US$1.46 billion by the year’s end. (Vietnam & World Economy)
