The Vietnam Automobile Manufacturers Association (VAMA) has announced that car sales of its 16 member carmakers rose 80 per cent on year to 41,557 units in the first eight months this year.

The eight-month sale was 1.72 per cent higher than last year of 40,853 vehicles, said VAMA.

The August auto sales rose 1.3 per cent on-month and 73 per cent on-year to 6,559 units, it said.

The growth was mainly contributed by high rise in all segments, especially sales of passenger cars and commercial cars based on the country’s bright economic prospects.

The passenger car sales were up 146 per cent on-year in August and 156 per cent on year in January-August period to 1,417 units and 9,320 units, respectively.

The commercial vehicle remains the best seller with sales of 3,162 units in August, up 81 per cent on-year, and 19,076 units in January-August, up 78 per cent on-year.

The SUV/MPV sales also jumped 35 per cent on year and 51 per cent to 1,472 units and 13,161 units, respectively.

Currently, car buyers have to accept to wait for two months or so to have their car deliveries because the demand is now too high, a car trader said.

Toyota still took the market lead with 1,796 vehicles sold in August and 11,732 units in eight-month period, holding 27 per cent and 28.2 per cent of the market share, respectively.

Vindaco sold no cars because it has stopped making Daihatsu vehicles.

Honda Vietnam recorded highest growth rate of 1,196 per cent to 350 units because the company started selling its Civic since late August 2006.

Vidamco, which makes GM-Daewoo cars, saw the second highest growth of 344 per cent in August and 288 per cent in January-August to 671 cars and 4,030 cars, respectively. The Vidamco jump was resulted from its introduction of Captiva with 1996 units.

According to government’s general statistics office, Vietnam imported 14,000 finished cars valued at US$271 million in the first eight months of this year, up 62.2 per cent on year in volume and 92.5 per cent in value.
