Vietnam's CPI Surges 8.12 per cent in 10 Months

Vietnam’s consumer price index (CPI) in October is estimated to go up 0.74 per cent on month, bringing the inflation index in January-October to 8.12 per cent, the General Statistics Office (GSO) reported Thursday.
 
The consumer goods inflated 9.34 per cent on year, which was pushed up by the food price rise of 13.94 per cent, and housing and construction material price hike of 11.74 per cent.
 
The ten-month CPI is threatening the country’s GDP growth, which is expected to grow 8.5 per cent this year.
 
In October alone, prices of food and foodstuff, which make up 42.8 per cent of the commodity basket to calculate CPI, climbed up 1.09 per cent from September and 11.78 per cent from the beginning of this year.
 
Housing and construction material saw the highest inflation rate at 1.51 per cent, lifting the ten-month CPI to 11.32 per cent.
 
Prices of culture, sports and entertainment, meanwhile, were down 0.73 per cent on month. It rose only 1.5 per cent from last December.

The CPI went up 0.78 per cent in urban areas and 0.71 per cent in rural areas in the month. The northwestern witnessed the most CPI rise at 1.11 per cent.
 
The gold price was estimated to increase 6.04 per cent in October, 14.51 per cent from last year’s end and 20.24 per cent from one year ago.
 
The prices of U.S dollar fell 0.6 per cent against the Vietnamese dong. It rose 0.45 per cent from last December and 0.67 per cent from last October. (GSO Oct 2007)
