Langbiang Legend
Located 2,169 metres above sea level, Langbiang legend concerns a passionate love stronger than any custom. Langbiang is compared with Lam Vien Highland of Da Lat, and is an ideal tourist destination. Tourists can climb and explore the mountain.
A touching love story
The love story about the boy K'lang (Lat ethnic group) and the girl called HHÆbiang (Chil ethnic group) has touched a lot of tourists arriving here. The houses of K'lang and Hobiang were located at the base of the mountain, and they accidentally met each other when picking fruit in the forest. They fell in love at first sight. K'lang bravely saved HHÆbiang from cruel wolves. However, due to the vow between the two clans, Hobiang was not allowed to marry K’lang. In defiance of the strict rules and feudal rites of the two clans, K’land and Hobiang determined to get married. They became wife and husband and left home to live on the highest area of the mountain. When Hobiang became ill, K'lang did everything in his power to save her but Hobiang could not recover. He sadly returned and asked the village to save her. Ending the story, Hobiang died when she was hit by the poisoned arrow targeted at K'lang from the village. Sorrowfully, K'lang cried much, and his tears streaming out turned into a big stream, now called Dankia (Gold Stream). After the death of the couple, the father of Hobiang regretted and decided to unite all the clans into an ethnic group called K'ho. Since then, couples in the village have felt easy to come to each other. The high mountain in La Ngu Thuong Village, where K'lang and HHÆbiang died, is named Langbiang - the compound name of the couple, to commemorate the two persons and their faithful love.
Enjoying nature
Some 12 kilometres north of Da Lat City, in Lac Duong District, the two mountains of Langbiang stand imposingly as evidence of the legend. The mountain has two peaks, so called Ong Mountain and Ba Mountain. Local people often call Ba Mountain due to the conception on matriarchy. Tourists can explore the mountain peak by strolling along the trails, or renting a car to the mountain peak. The winding road curves around the forest. The Doctor Yersin once stepped on the mountain and had the great impression of standing in front of an immense and deserted highland area reminding him of a choppy sea with huge waves. The imposing mountains on the horizon bring out the scenery and create a charming background. Standing on the mountain peak, you can see the Dankia River with small streams winding around the mountain. Da Lat can also be seen, with small houses dotting the mountains and trees like a poetic landscape picture.
Langbiang is considered a tourism destination for outdoor tourism, exploring nature and learning about the special culture of local people. The whole area around Langbiang Mountain is covered with a thick, high and green grass in the rainy season. The valley is the home to many animals and plants unique to the region. There is a big valley halfway up the mountain, where the festival of 100-year anniversary of establishment and development of Da Lat City was successfully held. Therefore, the valley is called Hundred Year Valley. The valley at the foot of the mountain is an entertainment and ecotourism area. With a tour from a travel agent, tourists can attend the exchange programme, with camp-fire and drinking Can wine with ethnic minority groups in the city, listening to them talking about interesting stories and cultural features of their groups.
