Vietnam: 12.95 Mln Rural Households Use Electricity
A total of 12.95 million or 93.95 per cent of families in rural areas of Vietnam gained access to electricity early this year, said the state-owned Electricity of Vietnam Group (EVN).
The number of electricity users reaches 86.91 per cent in rural areas of northern mountainous and midland provinces, 67 per cent in northwestern mountainous provinces, 97 per cent in central coastal region, 83.68 per cent in central highlands region, 93.64 per cent in southeastern areas, and 91.46 per cent in southwestern region.
EVN has built power grids for 3,127 or 96.95 per cent of communes in all of 118 districts nationwide over the past decade.
Nearly one million households in remote and mountainous areas, and 231 communes have not yet had access to electricity, said the group.
EVN has targeted to make all communes across the country and over 95 per cent of households in rural areas use electricity by the end of 2015.
To this end, the group is speeding up construction of new power grids, and boosting the implementation of tens of Rural Energy Projects Phase II (RE2) and projects to supply power for highland villages in five central highlands provinces.
EVN needs VND480 trillion (US$30 billion) to carry out the national electricity development strategy from now to 2015 and vision toward 2025 or Plan VI.
Vietnam is facing an adverse power thirst, which is estimated at 8.6 billion kWh this year, 10.3 billion kWh in 2009 and 7.2 billion kWh in 2010. (Vietnam & World Economy)
