Vietnam is estimated to have exported 4.727 million tons of coal valued at US$220 million in the first three months of this year, down 41.1 per cent on year in terms of volume and down 10.7 per cent in terms of value, said the General Statistic Office on March 31.

In March, the country is reported to export 1.6 million tons valued at US$75 million, GSO noted.

GSO does not give any reason, however.

The country top miner, Vietnam Coal and Mineral Industries Group targeted to produce 40 million tons of coal and its revenues to rise 15 per cent to VND38 trillion (US$2.375 billion) this year.

It plans to export 20 million tons of coal worth US$700 million this year down from 32.5 million tons worth US$1.01 billion in 2007. (GSO March 2008, Saigon Liberation)
