Vietnam shipped abroad some 8.62 million tons of coal valued at US$421 million in the first four months this year, down 20.7 per cent in volume but up 28 per cent in value, said the General Statistics Office (GSO).

April’s figures were 2.6 million tons and US$156 million, respectively.

This year, the country is expected to export 28 million-29 million tons of coal, a reduction of some 11 per cent against last year.

Vietnam is gradually cutting coal export volume and will stop outbound coal shipments before 2015 in order to serve the increasing domestic demand for the mineral.

The nation’s demand for coal will sharply increase in the near future as the country will put into operation several coal-fired power plants with a combined capacity of 6,000 megawatts by 2011. (GSO April 2008)
