Vietnam’s capital city of Hanoi is expected to receive 1.5 million foreign tourists in 2010, 500,000 higher than last year’s figure, said Deputy Director of the Hanoi Culture, Sports and Tourism Department Truong Minh Tien.

The city aims to raise the average stay to 3.1 days this year from 2.75 days in 2005 and tourism earnings will account for 10.38% of the city’s GDP, the Vietnam National Administration of Tourism (VNAT) said.

This year, the city will hold series of important events to mark the 1000th anniversary of Thang Long-Hanoi and the National Tourism Year 2010, Tien added, hoping the activities will help the city lure more foreign tourists.

Hanoi welcomed around one million international travelers in 2009, down 20% from a year earlier due to the global economic slowdown.

The city now has 511 accommodation centers with more than 12,700 rooms, including 178 ranked hotels with 8424 rooms (eight five-star hotels, six four-star hotels, and 19 three-star hotels).

At present, the number of foreign tourists to Hanoi accounts for 33% of that of the whole country. (Vietnamtourism)
