Vietnam Attracts $180B FDI To Date
Vietnam has to date attracted a total pledged foreign direct investment (FDI) of $180 billion, the Ministry of Planning and Investment (MPI) said.
Between 2007 and 2009, the country licensed 4,098 FDI projects worth $114.15 billion, representing a 4.5-fold increase compared to the set goal of the 2006-2010 period.
Foreign investors in Vietnam were estimated to disburse $29.5 billion from 2007 and 2009, the MPI added.
The sharp increase in FDI showed the Vietnamese improved business environment, said the Central Institute of Economic Management (CIEM).
The institute, however, warned that the FDI rise has affected the national sustainable development objectives as localities have been racing to build industrial parks to attract more foreign companies without paying attention to environmental impacts.
The country targets to pull in between $22 and $25 billion FDI this year, the MPI said. (Liberated Saigon)
