Vietnam fetched $467.7 million from exporting plastic in the first half of this year, the Ministry of Industry and Trade said, giving no comparative figure.

The Southeast Asian nation raked in $85 million from plastic outbound shipments in June, up 22% on year, the Sai Gon Tiep Thi online newspaper reported late Tuesday, citing the ministry.

The ministry attributed the country reaped a monthly average of over $80 million from plastic exports since the beginning of this year, elaborating that the product was shipped to nearly 70 markets worldwide in the second half of June.

Japan is currently Vietnam’s top plastic importer with revenue of $10.6 million in the second half of June, accounting for 25.7% of the country’s total export revenue during the period.

With such a positive result, the ministry forecast the country’s plastic exports may total over $1billion this year.

Recently, the Vietnam Plastic Association said the nation will likely save nearly $1 billion per year by using between 35% and 50% of recycled plastic.

The country is estimated to have spent $2.03 billion on importing plastic in the first seven months of this year, up 38.5% on year, said the government’s General Statistics Office (GSO). (sgtt.vn Jul 27)
