Vietnam Uses ADB Funds Effectively, Deputy PM Khiem Says
The Vietnamese government has been effectively using the official development assistance (ODA) funds from Asian Development Bank (ADB), Deputy Prime Minister Pham Gia Khiem said.
Khiem made the statement at a meeting with Vice President Lawrence Greenwood of the ADB during the latter’s visit to Vietnam to attend the Greater Mekong Sub-region’s Ministerial meeting in Hanoi Aug 19-20.
Also at the meeting, Khiem highly appreciated the ADB’s assistances in the last years, which had considerably contributed to Vietnam’s socio-economic development, the state-run Vietnam News Agency said Friday.
Lawrence hailed the Vietnamese government’s efforts in boosting its socio-economic development, especially in poverty reduction, adding that many countries will learn from the country’s experience.
He also noted that the ADB will provide more financial assistance for Vietnam in the areas of power generation and metro construction and called on the country to contribute to the ASEAN Infrastructure Construction Fund.
By end 2009, the ADB provided over US$8 billion for 87 projects and programs in Vietnam, making the country become its third largest aid recipient behind Bangladesh and Pakistan.
ADB will continue providing official development assistance (ODA) for Vietnam in the years to come, JeaJung Song ADB Executive Director said in a recent meeting with SBV Governor Nguyen Van Giau. (VNS)
