October 13 is the date 59 years ago President Ho Chi Minh sent a historic letter to Vietnamese industrialists and traders and last year Prime Minister Phan Van Khai officially announced it Vietnamese Entrepreneurs’ Day. In addition to days honouring physicians, teachers and journalists, from 2004, Vietnamese Entrepreneurs’ Day has been added to the list.
Vietnam Entrepreneurs’ Day (October 13) is a milestone recognizing and honouring the business community by the State and society. It is not only an embodiment of cultural and spiritual aspects of the policy of renewal and socialist oriented economy but also an abolition of prejudice against entrepreneurs and the business community.
With the policy of renewal, the Vietnamese business community has taken shape and developed in all economic sectors including some 3,000 State-owned enterprises, 180,000 non-State, nearly 6,000 FDI and 2.6 million households enterprises. It plays an important role in creating jobs, improving living conditions, contributing to the State budget and developing a sustainable economy. The business community and entrepreneurs have actively participated in emulation drives on production and saving initiated by the Vietnam Fatherland Front and mass organisations, contributing to the relief of flood victims and poor people.
The Party and State highly value the role of the business community in the modernisation of the country. At the annual meeting with the businesses in 2004, Prime Minister Phan Van Khai said that “To attain the goal of prosperous people and strong nation, there must be a powerful business community shouldering the task. To this end, the business community must be developed to regional and world standards, making Vietnam an industrial country by 2020”.
Therefore, in the coming years, especially when Vietnam is integrating into the world economy, the role of Vietnamese business community is even more important. With the assistance and guidance of the government and under the roof of VCCI, Vietnamese business community and entrepreneurs continue to upgrade themselves and play the role of “locomotive” of the economy, eradicating poverty and developing Vietnam to regional and world standards.
