Prime Minister Phan Van Khai officially issued Decision No 178/QD-TTg on October 5, 2004 to approve a plan to comprehensively develop Phu Quoc island in southernmost Kien Giang province into an ecological and luxury eco-tourism central of international stature by 2010 and in the future to 2020.

Accordingly, the plan aims to attract 2-3 million local and international tourists to the island each year with high quality services.

The Prime Minister has urged local government including the People’s Committee of Kien Giang province and Phu Quoc district and relevant central bodies to maintain close cooperation in acquiring the planning and incentive policies relating to investment, immigration, tax, and land use rent in order to attract more domestic and foreign investment.

The plan will develop Phu Quoc Island into a diversified tourism center including spa tourism, ecological tourism, aquatic sport, oceanography park, sightseeing and fishing activities.

Phu Quoc will also host other high-grade entertainment activities and international conferences.

In order to create high grade and competitive tourism products, the plan will give priority to a 100 hectare general tourism centre, based on the combination of a number of specific function centres to set up tourism groups such as Duong Dong-Duong To tourism group and An Thoi tourism group.

The island will also project agriculture, forestry and aquaculture development plans in line with supporting tourism, while strengthening defence and security with a view to ensuring sustainable development.

In terms of tourist infrastructure, the district will set up an international airport and seaport, a convenient transportation system, water and power supply system, waste treatment system and modern telecommunication services in order to provide visitors with the best tourism services.

In terms of environment, the district will strengthen land use management, natural resource and ecological environment protection. It will also pay attention to controlling immigration in order to make Phu Quoc island a green, clean and safe tourism island.

Phu Quoc island, with great tourism potentiality, is applying incentive policies on investment, immigration, land use rent and simple administrative procedures, always with an open door to welcome all domestic and foreign investors for further development.
