Vietnam government is planning to pour VND3.8 trillion (US$239 million) into a project to develop the tourism sector of Phu Quoc, Vietnam’s biggest island in southernmost Kien Giang province, in a move to turn it into a high-quality eco-tourism center of the country, the region and the world.

Under the scheme, the capital will be injected into the construction of 15 tourism complexes and the building of four seaports, six international wharfs and two airports to better serve tourists.

Phu Quoc Island, lying in the Gulf of Thailand, is famous for its green forests and white sandy beaches. It is now home to 85,000 residents, boasting 150 km of coastline and a good geographical location convenient for international access by sea and air.

The 561 sq.km island, which is often considered the cleanest area in Southeast Asia, has been selected as a model for the marketing and advertising of the tourism sector's image to both foreign and local tourists. “It is an ideal eco-tourist destination for tourists,” an official of Kien Giang provincial tourism department said.

At present, Phu Quoc has 68 lodging establishments with 1,275 rooms. Phu Quoc aims to welcome 150,000-160,000 visitors and reach revenues of VND150-180 billion (US$9.5 million - $11.4 million) this year.
