Vietnam Exports 4.8Mln Tons of Coal in Jan-February
Vietnam is estimated to have shipped abroad 4.8 million tons of coal in the first two months of 2007, earning US$138 million, up 22.9 per cent in volume and 12.8 per cent in value on-year, the General Statistic Office reports.
In the two-month period, the coal industry reported total output of 6.92 million tons, an on-year increase of 24.9 per cent.
The country exports coal to 16 countries and territories worldwide, major export markets being China, Japan, South Korea and Taiwan.
Vietnam’s top miner Vinacomin in the two months exploited 6.16 million tons, produced 5.86 million tons of clean coal and sold 5.75 million tons with exports accounting for 3.38 million tons, a rise of 16 per cent on-year.
The miner said its total revenues were nearly VND4.2 trillion (US$262.37 million) in January-February, of which over VND3 trillion (US$191.18 million) came from coal production alone.
The Ministry of Industry forecast that Vietnam will have to import coal for domestic consumption in a near future, with imported volumes estimated at 1.3 million tons in 2010, 5.9 million tons in 2015, 15.4 million tons in 2020 and 54.4 million tons in 2025.
According to the ministry, Vietnam will need around 29-32 million tons of coal for domestic consumption in 2010, 47-50 million tons in 2015, 69-72 million tons in 2020 and 112-115 million tons in 2025. (GSO Feb 2007, Market)
