A recent UNESCO national commission study of Vietnam’s Cu Lao Cham (Hoi An-Quang Nam) shows that the region has ecological and biological diversity, and various relics from the Sa Huynh, Cham Pa and Dai Viet cultures. In addition, Cu Lao Cham also has rare fauna and flora listed in Vietnam’s Red Book.

At the working section between National commission of Vietnam UNESCO and the World Biosphere and Human Organization (held on 7 September), vice chairman of Quang Nam people’s committee, Tran Minh Ca approved linking Cu Lao Cham and Hoi An, and submitted the proposal that Cu Lao Cham should be recognized as a world biosphere reservation in 2008. The reservation area includes Hoi An, Cu Lao Cham, and the salt marsh in Cua Dai, with total area of 4,000 ha.
