The Vietnamese Song Thu Company December 15 opened a ceremony to kick off the construction of an oilspill response ship, the most modern of its kind in the Southeast Asia, VietNamNet reported.
The so-called MPV 5212 facility is the first multi-functional oilspill response ship in Vietnam, but the second professional one, after the L146 to be launched in early 2008, in the country, said colonel Ha Son Hai, director of Song Thu Company.
The planned ship, which was designed by the Dutch Damen Group, will be 52.4 meters long and 12 meters wide, and have a 4.5-meter water line, to feature a steel cover and two screw-propellers.
Its driving force will be provided by two electric engines with a 3,500 CV capacity, which will be cooled via a sea water box.
The ship is due for operation in the second quarter of 2009 to conduct functions to control offshore oil-related pollution, oilspill response, tow cargo ships, carry goods in essential situations, rescue human, ships and boats.
“The building of the MPV 5212 ship will keep track with the demand to enhance capacity by the Vietnam National Committee for Search and Rescue,” noted major-general Nguyen Son Ha, the committee’s deputy head.
Damen group and Song Thu Company has cooperated to build nine large-scaled ships for domestic consumption and exports since July 2005 when the two sides joined hands to construct the first one with a capacity of 3,500 VN for Vietnam’s sea police, said Shuurman, Trade manager of Damen group in Asia-Pacific.
