Vietnam is estimated to require around VND60 trillion (US$3.75 billion) to develop its seaports from now to 2010, the local New Hanoi newspaper reported April 14.

The capital will be spent on the construction and upgrade of 10 seaports, including Haiphong international port and Van Phong transshipment port.

Of the sum, over VND20.5 trillion will be poured into northern seaports and VND14 trillion for central seaports.

Meanwhile, seaports in the southern region will need some VND20.1 trillion and the rest for ones in the southwestern region.

Vietnam’s seaport system is expected to handle at least 300 million tons of cargo each year by 2020.

The Southeast Asian country now has 266 seaports handling more than 80  per cent of the total imports and exports. Nine ports could be upgraded to handle 50,000 DWT cargo ships or 3,000 TEU container ships. (New Hanoi)
