Vietnam Has not Okayed Biggest Thermo-Power Center in South
The Vietnamese Ministry of Industry and Trade has recently informed to Tan Tao Group that its project to build a 4,400-megawatt thermal power center in southern Kien Giang province lacks essential conditions for approval.
The Vietnam Economic Times newspaper April 15 posted the news but did not give more details why the ministry has not yet granted a license to the country’s biggest thermal power project.
The Tan Tao Group (ITA Group) is seeking investors to join in a US$7.7 billion project to build the 4,400 MW Kien Luong Thermal Power Center and Nam Du deep-sea port complex in the southern province of Kien Giang.
The group April 8 signed contracts with US-based Black & Veatch, China’s FHDI Engineering Co, Ltd and Vietnam’s Power Engineering Consulting Co No 2 to provide consulting and assist in the call for capital.
Construction of the US$6.7 billion power plant and US$1 billion port would begin in the last quarter of next year, said ITA Group deputy director Nguyen Tuan Minh.
The thermal power center is due for groundbreaking in 2009 with the first operation in 2013.
The power plants will consume up to 10 million tons of coal a year when they run at full capacity of 4,400 MW by 2016. (Vietnam Economic Times)
