Vietnam Reports 1.23 Mln Tons of Rice in Stock
Vietnam now has around 1.23 million tons of rice in stock after exporting 1.57 million tons since the beginning of this year, the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development said.
The ministry said the country’s total paddy supplies in the first four months of 2008 and November and December of 2007 were 19.8 millions tons, of which 14.8 million tons were for domestic consumption.
In January-April of 2008, Vietnam harvested 17.6 million tons of winter-spring paddy, up by 400,000 tons on year. Among localities, Mekong Delta region reported an on year rise of 550,000 tons, while south coastal region reporting on year decrease of 120,000 tons.
The Ministry said high paddy prices are encouraging local farmers to take care of summer-autumn paddy.
Vietnam’s total paddy output in 2008 may surpass its set target at 36 million tons, the ministry forecast. (Vinanet)
