Ministry Asked to Adjust Regulations on Miss Contests
Vietnam’s central province of Khanh Hoa authorities have sent a dispatch to Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism to propose for adjustments of regulations on the organization of beauty contests, the Tien Phong newspaper reported on Feb 26.
According to the provincial people’s committee, it has had received proposals from three enterprises to organize three beauty contests in the Nha Trang city in 2009, including Miss Vietnam Universe, Miss World Vietnamese and Miss Vietnam.
However, in the new regulation on beauty contests issued on December 30 2008, the ministry of culture, sports and tourism allowed only one national competition per year.
Under the regulation, the above-mentioned pageants are impossible to take place in the coastal central city.
Khanh Hoa Province proposed the ministry to raise the number of contests to two or three ones per year.
The ministry decided to issue the new regulation as Vietnamese audiences said they were satiated with beauty contests.
By allowing only one national competition per year, the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism’s Performing Arts Department said it hoped to increase the quality of national contests to give Vietnamese winners a better competitive edge at international beauty pageants.
However, experts say authorities are shackling Vietnamese beauty queens’ ability to compete at the global level. (Pioneer, Young People)
