Vietnam exported $39 million worth of dragon fruits in 2009, down 11% from a year earlier.

Vietnamese dragon fruit growers and exporters went through a hard year in 2009 as China and Taiwan, the two biggest importers, tightened inspection on the fruit quality while such potential markets as the U.S. and Japan reduced imports.

Low demand from importers pulled the fruit prices down sharply, particularly in Nov last year when the fruit prices suddenly shrank to VND2,500-VND4,000/kg from VND13,000-VND14,000/kg, upsetting local farmers.

The newspaper said that last year Vietnam exported its dragon fruits to 28 markets, with China, Thailand, Hong Kong and the Netherlands being the four biggest importers, accounting for 76% of Vietnam’s dragon fruit export value.

Among them, China took the lead with revenues of $16.1 million in Jan-Nov period, followed by Taiwan with $1.1 million. (Rauhoaquavn.vn)
