In 2010: Rice Export to Jumps Midyear
On March 2, 2010, in southern An Giang province, the Vietnam Food Association (VFA) held a meeting to review rice exportation in 2009 and preview plans to buy rice 2009-2010 winter-spring and stockpile 1 million metric tonnes under the guidance of the Government.
According to Mr Nguyen Thanh Bien, Deputy Minister of Industry and Trade and Head of Executive Rice Export Committee, the draft Decree of the Government stipulating rice export will cover antidumping and sanctions on antidumping. Companies offering lower than floor prices without permit will be subjected to administrative fines, business license revocation or operating shutdown.
At this conference, to sell rice harvest in the winter-spring crop and ensure the interest of farmers, VFA will facilitate its 30 member companies to purchase 1 million tonnes of rice for temporary stockpile in the Mekong Delta from now to the end of April 2010. The purchasing price is based on the market principle but it cannot be under VND4,000 per kilo. These supported companies will be facilitated to export rice in 2010 and they are requested to inform farmers of purchasing points.
In 2010, according to agricultural authorities, commercial rice in 2010 will reach 11.54 million tonnes, excluding the commodity taken from 2009.
VFA plans to export some 6 million tonnes of rice this year, with shipment focus in the middle of the year, to potential markets of the Philippines, Africa and Malaysia.
VFA said the rice price will continue to rise this year on back of climate changes and lean crops. Global demand for commercial rice is nearly 31 million tonnes, up 6 & - 10 & from 2009.
