Vietnamese travel agencies have halted organizing tours to Thailand because of massive rallies by the Red Shirts movement that backs former premier Thaksin Shinawatra now in exile.

Vietravel and Fiditour canceled Thailand tours from Mar 14-20 and steered travelers to other destinations, said Nguyen Thi Tuyet Mai, foreign affair director of Fiditour.

“We have received fewer booking tours to Thailand than usual in recent days,” Hanoitourist official said.

The Tourism Authority of Thailand on Mar 15 sent a message to Vietnamese travel firms, reassuring travelers who fear for their safety when traveling to the neighbor country.

In 2009, more than 362,000 Vietnamese people toured Thailand, up 7.8% over a year earlier.

The TAT is looking to a 10% on-year increase in the number of Vietnamese visitors to the country this year. (Pioneer)
